What is homeopathy, in a nutshell?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that recognises a derangement of a person’s “vital force” when sick. To bring about cure, homoeopathy uses a similar energetic force, in the form of a well selected remedy, to allow natural balance to return to the individual.

The word Homeopathy means same suffering. A way of explaining this is “let like be cured by like”. In short, this means that a substance that can cure a condition is capable of causing that condition. For example an onion may cause running nose and tearing eyes when cut. Taken as a homeopathic remedy, onion remedy (known by it’s Latin name, Allium Cepa) can cure some cases of hay fever. This concept is quite different to allopathic or conventional medicine, which generally treats with opposites.

Homeopathy is an individualised system of medicine. It treats people, not diseases. Therefore, not everyone with hay fever will benefit from Allium Cepa, because of the individual variations in hay fever. Selection of the remedy to suit the picture of the person is fundamental in the success of homeopathic treatment. When considering the remedy selection, look at how the patient actually is, what changes the symptoms, what sensations are there, what are the particular characteristics of this person with a disease. Finding at least three strong similarities (called rubrics) between patient and remedy generally means success in a first aid situation (called the ‘three legged stool”).

Another anomaly of homeopathy is the power of the remedies. The more a curative substance is diluted and potentised, the more powerful it’s effect on the individual. Potentising is a specific method of preparing a remedy that somehow harnesses the energetic signature of the remedy. The explanation of this phenomenon possibly lies within the realms of quantum science.

Homeopathic remedies come in different potencies. A commonly used one in Australia is the C (Centesimal) potency. If a remedy is 6C, it means it has been through a potenising and diluting process 6 times. A 30C remedy, has been through it 30 times. The 30C remedy is more powerful than the 6C remedy, even though less of the original material substance is contained in the remedy. This essentially means that one drop of a substance can potentially cure millions of people, because an unlimited amount of remedies can be made from it.

History of Homeopathy

Both Hippocrates and Paracelsus wrote that like will cure like.  However it was only in the late 1700s that German doctor, Samuel Hahneman formulated the system of classical homeopathy. This grew and became an increasingly used form of medicine. Currently homeopathy is the second most used form of medicine in the world, due to its huge popularity in India.

In 1910 a report was commissioned by the American Medical Association (AMA) on American medical education. It was called the Flexner Report, and it halted homeopathic training in US medicine schools. Interestingly, the AMA was a tiny organization at that time, compared to the American Homeopathic Association, which was flourishing. Lots of people were using homeopathy then.

Interestingly, the demise of homeopathic medicine use at the beginning of last century saw the huge rise in pharmaceutical medicines. Always interesting to see coinciding events in light of contemporary economic, cultural and health status.

Homeopathy is used increasingly throughout the world, particularly Europe and India. The British royal family still use homeopathy. Homeopathy is an effective and gentle form of cure.
